چکیده
Increased knowledge about energy dissipation processes around colliding ice floes is important for improved understanding of atmosphere-ice-ocean transfer, wave propagation through sea ice, and the polar climates. The aim this study to obtain such information by investigating floe dynamics in a large-scale experiment directly measuring quantifying turbulent kinetic (TKE). field work was carried out at Van Mijen Fjord on Svalbard, where 3 × 4 m sawed fast ice. Ice collisions relative water–ice motion were generated pulling back forth an oscillatory manner 6 pool, using two electrical winches. measured with range meter accelerometers, water turbulence acoustically Doppler velocimeters optically remotely operated vehicle bubbles as tracers. Turbulent spectra found contain inertial subrange cascading rate proportional ?5/3 power law. TKE decrease exponentially depth. total estimated assuming that induced over area corresponding surface floe. results suggest approximately 37% 8% input from winches dissipated absorbed collisions, respectively, which experimentally confirms mechanism fields.

Sea-Ice Floes Identification and Detection using Matlab
An unmanned aerial vehicle was used as a mobile sensor platform to collect sea-ice features at NyÅlesund in early May 2011, and several image processing algorithms have been applied to samples of sea-ice images to extract useful information about sea ice. The sea-ice statistics given by the floe size distribution, being an important parameter for climate and waveand structure-ice analysis, is c...
متن کاملCharacterizing the size and shape of sea ice floes
Monitoring drift ice in the Arctic and Antarctic regions directly and by remote sensing is important for the study of climate, but a unified modeling framework is lacking. Hence, interpretation of the data, as well as the decision of what to measure, represent a challenge for different fields of science. To address this point, we analyzed, using statistical physics tools, satellite images of se...
متن کاملGraph-based Method for Multitemporal Segmentation of Sea Ice Floes from Satellite Data
Automated segmentation of the sea ice evolution would allow scientists studying climate change to build accurate models of the sea ice meltdown process, which is a sensitive climate indicator. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which uses shape analysis and graph-based optimization for segmentation of a multiyear ice floe from time series of satellite images. Differently of the state-of...
متن کاملLaboratory Experiments on Wave Turbulence
This review paper is devoted to a presentation of recent progress in wave turbulence. I first present the context and state of the art of this field of research both experimentally and theoretically. I then focus on the case of wave turbulence on the surface of a fluid, and I discuss the main results obtained by our group: caracterization of the gravity and capillary wave turbulence regimes, th...
